Courses:

Homework Helpers: Math and LA for Parents and Caregivers

Want to be better equipped to help with your kids’ schoolwork?

This program will help you brush up on the basics, and keep up with the kids in Grades 1 - 8.

We will cover:

 
  • Whole numbers
  • Math facts
  • Addition and Subtraction
  • Multiplication and Division
  • Fractions
  • Integers
  • Ratio, Rates and Percentages


We will also work on reading and writing skills for Language Arts. You will

  •   Develop skimming and scanning strategies
  •   Identify main ideas and supporting details in written texts
  •   Identify and explain compare and contrast relationships in texts
  •   Make inferences based on facts and background information
  •   Organize ideas in a systematic way for writing non-fiction and essays


Our instructor will pace the material to meet the group’s needs, to make learning (or re-learning) math a little easier.

Return to Learn! GED / Trades Entrance Readiness (Spring 2023)

In this program, we will help you with:

  • Confidence in learning

Basic Computers (Whitecourt Spring 2023)

Bring your own laptop or use one of ours!

These sessions are designed for people learning Windows PCs, Microsoft Word, and basic email functions.

We will cover the following topics:

  • Basic Knowledge of Computers
    • Important vocabulary
    • Common hardware and accessories
    • Operating systems and applications

    • Types of computer drives and pointing actions
    • Basic file management
    • Copy, move, delete, and rename files/folders
    • File explorer and searching

Tech Talk: Digital Skills for Tablets and Smartphones

Gain confidence, practice using different devices, learn about online safety and security, get to know your settings, and learn more about the apps you use in your daily life.

GED Prep (Spring 2023)

Focus on developing and improving your writing, reading, science, social studies, and math skills. You can also practice various GED assessment tests to help you feel more comfortable in a timed testing environment.
 
With a mix of online lessons and exercises, and an in-person study group, and a NorQuest College instructor, this course will give you the flexibility to work at your own pace, with plenty of support.

Note: The GED exams will be offered in Whitecourt on June 28 and 29, 2023!

Read and Write Out Loud

Join us for this small, friendly class where we will build confidence and practice our reading and writing skills.

Our tutor will lead "book club" style reading activities and discussions, and will help with tips and tricks for reading strategies. You will learn new ways to improve your reading comprehension and retention.

We will do easy, fun writing exercises that help us:

  • look at our lives and our world from different angles, and gain new perspectives,
  • practice critical thinking by putting our thoughts into written words on paper.

In this group, everyone is respected and supported.

There are no mistakes!

There are no wrong answers!

We don’t worry about grammar or spelling!

NEW - Intermediate ESL Foundations for Learning

This course will help you to develop listening, speaking, reading and writing skills, and improve your online learning skills.

With a mix of online lessons and exercises, and an in-person study group, this course will give you the flexibility to work at your own pace, with plenty of support.

You will get access to an "online anytime" course, with an Instructor from NorQuest College. You will also be part of an in-person group that meets with an experienced English teacher in Whitecourt once a week.

In the course, you will listen to conversations to identify the main idea and specific details.

This course will help you understand and use vocabulary related to various topics. You will learn grammar as you need it.

You will read emails, paragraphs, stories, a novel, and written conversations about topics such as workplace problems and travelling in Alberta.

This course will assist you in creating and replying to emails, notes and other written messages at home or at work.

When you successfully complete this course, you will be able to do the following:
  • Show that you understand personal or public messages related to everyday situations as those listed above.
  • Follow written instructions related to these everyday situations.
  • Correctly answer questions about these texts on familiar topics.
  • Write short, formal or informal messages on these topics.
  • Express clear ideas and information in writing and speaking.

English Conversation Café (Spring 2023)

The ESL Conversation Café is a safe place where adults from all backgrounds can practice speaking and listening in English, learn new vocabulary, and make friends in the community.

Each week, small groups will choose a topic to discuss, and our experienced English teacher will help lead the conversation.

When: April 17 - June 26, 2023
Mondays from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm

One-on-one Tutoring

Adult students (18 years and older) are paired with a trained tutor who can help you improve your reading, writing, math, or help you with basic computer and digital skills. Tutoring for new speakers of English (ESL/ELL) is also available.

Each tutor and student pair will work one-on-one, at their own pace, on your goals in reading, writing, math or English Language Learning.

Gain confidence, develop and strengthen your skills at your own pace, and open doors to new learning, community and employment opportunities.

Adult Literacy (Reading, Writing, Document Use)

Want to improve your reading or writing? Need to feel more confident understanding and filling out forms?

Work one-on-one with a tutor, or join a small informal group to improve your literacy so you feel more confident to:

  • Read and understand important safety information, policies and procedures, fill out forms or take on more responsibility at work
  • Read with your kids, grandkids and other important children in your life
  • Understand and fill out forms for school, doctor’s office, or government services

Math and Numeracy

Whether you want to improve your math skills to help out with homework, manage your family budget, or you need it for work, the CALP at NorQuest can help.

We can offer classes or pair you with a tutor to build your skills and confidence with:

  • Whole numbers, addition, subtraction
  • Multiplication, and division
  • Fractions and decimals

GED Prep and Returning to Learning

Are you thinking about going back to school? The Community Adult Learning Program at NorQuest can help you set yourself up for success.

  • Work one-on-one with a tutor, or join small informal study groups to practice and improve the skills you need to get ready for a return to formal education
  • Take a blended GED prep course, with face-to-face personal support at our Whitecourt campus. Find the right combination of online, independent study, and personal support to prepare you for the GED tests
  • Get information about formal education opportunities, how to access them, and get the skills you need to succeed

English Language Learning

The Community Adult Learning Program at NorQuest can help you improve your English. Work one-on-one with a tutor, or join a small informal group to:

  • Practice your conversational English
  • Learn English for the workplace
  • Study English to help you connect with your community (school, doctor, government, volunteer opportunities…)
