Our CALP team will help you set learning goals that make sense for YOUR life and learning goals. We offer flexible programs that meet your needs, in a safe and welcoming learning space.

This six-part workshop will help you with the basic English you need in daily life in Canada.

NEW - Brush up on the Basics: Spelling and Grammar

  • Thinking about going back to school to do some Upgrading?
  • Want to get your GED?
  • Need to improve your writing for work?

This class will help you build the basics, to improve your writing, spelling and grammar at a junior high / high school level. Perfect for adults who struggled in school or who have been out of practice for a while!

This class is for people who speak, read and write English as their primary language.

GED / Trades Entrance Readiness (Fall 2023)

In this program, we will help you with:

  • Confidence in learning
  • Time management
  • Study skills
  • Test taking and managing test anxiety

English Conversation Café (Fall 2023)

The ESL Conversation Café is a safe place where adults from all backgrounds can practice speaking and listening in English, learn new vocabulary, and make friends in the community.

Each week, small groups will choose a topic to discuss, and our experienced English teacher will help lead the conversation.

Basic Computer Bootcamp (Fall 2023)

Bring your own laptop or use one of ours!

These sessions are designed for people learning Windows PCs, Microsoft Word, and basic email functions.

We will cover the following topics:

  • Basic Knowledge of Computers
    • Important vocabulary
    • Common hardware and accessories
    • Operating systems and applications
  • File Management
    • Types of computer drives and pointing actions
    • Basic file management
    • Copy, move, delete, and rename files/folders
    • File explorer and searching
  • Word Processing
    • Create a document
    • Save, retrieve, and print documents
    • Formatting a document (fonts, margins headers, footers, etc.)

    • Send, Reply, Forward
    • Attachments
    • Email folders
    • Email etiquette for work and personal use

Tech Talk: Digital Skills for Tablets and Smartphones

GED Prep (Fall 2023)

Focus on developing and improving your writing, reading, science, social studies, and math skills. You can also practice various GED assessment tests to help you feel more comfortable in a timed testing environment.
 
With a mix of online lessons and exercises, support from a NorQuest College instructor AND a tutor here in Whitecourt, this course will give you the flexibility to work at your own pace, and get all the help you need along the way.

Note: The GED exams will be offered in Whitecourt in October 2023 and January 2024.

When: Open start date

This "online anytime" course takes most people 10 - 14 weeks to complete.

One-on-one Tutoring

Adult students (18 years and older) are paired with a trained tutor who can help you improve your reading, writing, math, or help you with basic computer and digital skills. Tutoring for new speakers of English (ESL/ELL) is also available.

Each tutor and student pair will work one-on-one, at their own pace, on your goals in reading, writing, math or English Language Learning.

Gain confidence, develop and strengthen your skills at your own pace, and open doors to new learning, community and employment opportunities.

Want to improve your reading or writing? Need to feel more confident understanding and filling out forms?

Work one-on-one with a tutor, or join a small informal group to improve your literacy so you feel more confident to:

  • Read and understand important safety information, policies and procedures, fill out forms or take on more responsibility at work
  • Read with your kids, grandkids and other important children in your life
  • Understand and fill out forms for school, doctor’s office, or government services

Math and Numeracy

Whether you want to improve your math skills to help out with homework, manage your family budget, or you need it for work, the CALP at NorQuest can help.

We can offer classes or pair you with a tutor to build your skills and confidence with:

  • Whole numbers, addition, subtraction
  • Multiplication, and division
  • Fractions and decimals
  • And more!

English Language Learning

The Community Adult Learning Program at NorQuest can help you improve your English. Work one-on-one with a tutor, or join a small informal group to:

  • Practice your conversational English
  • Learn English for the workplace
  • Study English to help you connect with your community (school, doctor, government, volunteer opportunities…)

GED and Trades Entrance Readiness

Are you thinking about going back to school? The Community Adult Learning Program at NorQuest can help you set yourself up for success.

  • Work one-on-one with a tutor, or join small informal study groups to practice and improve the skills you need to get ready for a return to formal education
  • Take a blended GED prep, math or Pre-Trades course, with face-to-face personal support at our Whitecourt Learning Centre. Find the right combination of online, independent study, and personal support to prepare you for your next steps
  • Get information about formal education opportunities, how to access them, and get the skills you need to succeed
